The Eco-Friendly Approach: Sustainable Practices in Eiderdown Manufacturing

by Lucas Mills 27 Mar 2024 0 Comments

If sustainability is important to you, and you like to be sure that any products you buy are responsibly sourced, you'll sleep easy with Eiderdown… not just because our bedding is deliciously comfortable. Eiderdown is fully committed to ethical sourcing, transparent practices, and minimal environmental impact throughout our manufacturing process.  Best of all, many of Eiderdown’s quality products are made right here in New Zealand.

We know you love our luxurious products for their excellent quality, but there are a few facts that may make you love them even more. When you buy Eiderdown bedding, you're not only choosing a fantastic night's sleep; you're doing your bit for a better, more sustainable world.

Responsible Down Standard (RDS) Certification

At Eiderdown, our primary focus is sleeping well. For us, that also includes knowing we adhere to high animal welfare standards. We proudly hold certification to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), ensuring that our down and feathers meet rigorous animal welfare criteria and are traced from farm to finished product. As the sole bedding manufacturer in Australasia with RDS certification, we guarantee that our entire range, including Hungarian Down Quilts & Pillows, Goose Down Toppers, and Goose Down Blankets, adheres to these stringent standards.

The RDS is an independent, voluntary global standard developed over three years with input from animal welfare groups, industry experts, brands, and retailers. It aims to recognise and reward best practices in animal welfare, emphasising the moral accountability of all parties involved in the supply chain. By meeting the Five Freedoms outlined by the RDS—ensuring freedom from hunger and thirst, discomfort, pain, injury or disease, the ability to express normal behaviour, and freedom from fear and distress—Eiderdown remains committed to ethical sourcing and consumer trust. With 100% of our down independently certified to the RDS, customers can rest assured their bedding choices reflect their values.

Sustainable Sourcing

Eiderdown's dedication to sustainability goes beyond certification. Our eco-friendly practices in sourcing down and feathers exemplify our commitment to reducing environmental harm. From selecting suppliers who adhere to ethical standards to ensuring traceability from source to product, Eiderdown guarantees that every material used in our luxury bedding range is chosen with the planet's best interests in mind.

Transparent Supply Chain

Transparency is extremely important to us at Eiderdown. By maintaining an open supply chain, we empower consumers to make informed choices about the products they purchase. From knowing the precise origin of our materials to evaluating and insisting on the best quality, our customers can trust Eiderdown to prioritise integrity at every step of the manufacturing process.

Impact on the Environment

Beyond considering animal welfare, Eiderdown's sustainable practices contribute to reducing the environmental footprint of the bedding industry. By implementing measures to minimise our carbon footprint and embrace eco-friendly alternatives, Eiderdown leads the way in responsible manufacturing within the home goods sector.

With much of our range manufactured locally, it’s good to know your beautiful bedding hasn’t racked up thousands of frequent flyer points and added to the world’s carbon footprint.

Looking ahead, Eiderdown's journey towards sustainability is ongoing. We continue to innovate and evolve and remain fully committed to environmental responsibility. We want to make a positive impact on the planet, as well as on the quality of your sleep.
